TEACHER TRAINING

While Susan's projects have been mostly based on her travels in India she stresses that any creative Indian Teacher Trainingendeavour can be a good starting point of almost any classroom study...
"Hands on experience with art materials can
*unlock creativity
*stimulate imagination
*develop new skills
*reduce stress & associated negative effects
*encourage confidence
and
*enhance visual perception.
The importance is to provide children with materials, give a few hints about how to use them and then leave them to explore for themselves. The process of being creative, what the children learn as they explore, is as important as the final product."

Indian Teacher TrainingSusan explains,
"The challenge is to persuade teachers that they have time for this approach. That it is not an optional extra to be indulged in only after the theory has been covered and the written work completed."

Teachers get a bonus too as there are fewer discipline problems when compared to conventional classes. Even usually disruptive children are keen to achieve, to get their creation finished.

"Working with art and craft materials gives the teacher a means of assessing how much children have assimilated. It's an absorbing alternative to writing essays which many children find difficult or boring" explains Susan.
